Donald Roy Massey, 61, of Portland, died Nov. 15, 2019, at his home.
A private burial took place at the Haines Cemetery. There will be a celebration of Don’s life on July 18, 2020, in the Baker area.
Don was born on July 21, 1958, at Baker to Roy and Cheryl Heard Barnes. He attended schools in Oregon and Washington ending up at Laurelhurst Grade School in sixth grade and ending his high school years at Grant High in Portland. He also took several classes at Portland State University. Don played piano by ear and even though he took piano lessons and could read music he preferred playing by ear as he could add all the extra notes. In his teen years he also did some composing.
Don had an aptitude for solving problems and found he had a specialized understanding and knowledge of how industrial cranes operated. He attended many classes throughout the U.S. furthering his knowledge in the latest technology of the building, maintenance and repair of industrial cranes. He had a following and repaired, inspected, maintained and installed cranes at several large dams and industries throughout the Northwest. Two of his favorite job sites were the Ford Motor Company truck plant in Mexico and the Port of Portland where he made many special friends. He truly cared for all his clients and the people he worked with. At his passing he was employed at Industrial Inspections Services as senior crane technician and project manager in Longview, Washington.
He had no need for material things but he did enjoy looking for a good bargain. His idea of relaxation was studying and learning new things. Most of all he liked helping and encouraging someone in need.
Don was married to Carla Morgan Yates in 1981, and they later separated. She preceded him in death in 1998. He was also preceded in death by his father, Roy Barnes.
