Her husband, Donald J. O'Brien died in 1989. She leaves a daughter, Patricia M. O'Brien of Shrewsbury; 3 grandchildren, Ryan Gray and his companion, Krysta Agnew; Shannen Gray and Michael Gray; 1 great grandson, Landan Gray; a niece and a nephew; also survived by her caretaker and friend, Todd Sears. She was predeceased by a son, Frederick "Rick" O'Brien, a daughter, Gail O'Brien and her sister, Winifred O'Reagan.
Madelyn was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Frederick J. and Gertrude (Redford) Murphy and had lived in Shrewsbury most of her life. She graduated from Commerce High School and Salter Secretarial School both in Worcester.
She had been employed for the Town of Shrewsbury for 22 years. Madelyn climbed her way up the ladder at town hall, working as the secretary for four Superintendents before she retired in 1988.
Mrs. O'Brien was a member of Saint Mary's Parish in Shrewsbury. She also enjoyed being with her grandchildren and spending time on Cape Cod.
Madelyn's funeral will be held on Thursday, May 24th at 10 AM in Saint Mary's Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Avenue, Cambridge, MA 2140 or the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
