The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, July 1, 2017 at the Oglethorpe Funeral Chapel, Inc., 607 Kaigler Street, Oglethorpe, Georgia. Reverend Bernard T. Fowler, Pastor of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Hightstown, New Jersey will officiate.
Joseph Wendell Fowler was a man of quiet words who let his heart speak for him. His life provided abundant evidence of his giving spirit – a man who gave love freely to his family and community. Joseph departed this life Monday, June 19, 2017.
Joe, as he is affectionately called, was born to Rev. Edward. J. Fowler, Jr. and Lillian Benton Fowler, on March 29, 1959 in Albany, Georgia. Joe was baptized at an early age at the Saco Missionary Baptist Church in Cotton, Georgia under the pastorate of Rev. Edward J. Fowler, Jr.
He was licensed into ministry in the early 1990’s under the pastorate of Rev. Edward J. Fowler, Jr. In his later years, Joe was an active missionary for Christ who witnessed and shared his love for people through his support of the Hosea Williams Community Outreach Ministry, in Atlanta, which focused on feeding the hungry and homeless.
A tinkerer ever since he was a child, Joe displayed a high degree of mechanical aptitude that led him to develop a passion for electrical work. He graduated from DeVry College and became a licensed electrician affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 613. He was a very generous person who frequently provided his skills and expertise to friends and family at no charge at all.
Although Joe was a long-term resident of Atlanta, Georgia, he grew up and was educated in the Dougherty County School System in Albany; he graduated from Monroe High School in 1977. Joe loved football and enjoyed playing for the River Road Raiders and the Monroe High Tornadoes. After high school, Joe attended Albany State College and Fort Valley State College before finding his passion for electrical work.
Joe was loved by his family, and he reflected that love back. He was especially proud of his nieces and nephews. He tracked their growth and development from birth and was known to spend many days tracking down the hottest gift of the season for each of them. He enjoyed entertaining his nieces and nephews with his remote-controlled airplanes and cars. Yes, Joe remained a kid at heart.
He was preceded in death by two brothers in law: Melvin C. Davis and Timothy Kellam, Sr.
