Norma Bush died February 23, 2020. She was 98 years old. A memorial service will be at First Baptist Church chapel on Thursday, March 19, 2020 at 10:00 AM.
Norma was born on October 22, 1921 to James and Gracie Jones in Van Zandt County, TX. She was the second of five children. Her siblings, Earlene, Mildred, Jo, and Jake preceded her in death as did her parents. Norma married Robert Bush on February 1, 1947. They celebrated 61 years together before his death in 2008.
Norma was a force of nature with an independence not seen in most of her peers. She was witty, outgoing, engaging and creative. Norma was generous with her praise and honest in her critiques. Norma enjoyed her volunteer roles, in which she actively engaged until her 90’s. She served as a Pink Lady at the hospitals in the communities where they lived, at church teaching children, in the local schools as a reading tutor, and leading the local PTA. She had great leadership and motivational skills. She expressed her creativity through her ability to design and make clothes and to decorate her home. Robert teased her by stating that he never knew what color the walls would be when he came home. She was a lifelong learner taking tailoring classes at Amarillo College, interior design classes at Navarro County Community College and continuing in Bible study classes. While she never had the opportunity for a formal education, she made sure her family had the means and support to attend college. Norma and Robert were active members in their churches. Her strong faith provided the foundation for her life. She remained active into her 90s and even began swimming lessons on her 70th birthday.
Her family feels overwhelming gratitude for the opportunity to have witnessed her life, learned from her, been fed by her, loved her, and laughed with her. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Jon Hilsabeck, granddaughter and her husband, April and Chris Downum , grandson and his wife, Aaron and Heather Parmer and seven great grandchildren.
