Emma Castro was born in Kassel, Germany, June 9, 1906, to John Eckles, and Anna Katherine Krebs. At the age of 6 she accompanied her family on a ship as immigrants to America. Emma along with parents, sisters Louise and Ann and brothers Henry and George relocated from Galveston, Texas to Northern California. They homesteaded in the rich fertile Fresno Valley.

Emma met and married Alfred Castro, a son of one of the prominent early California Spanish families. Together they had five children: Carmelita, Illa, Patricia, George and Neal. Their life was not easy and eventually Emma was left to raise her children alone.

Her stature of 4 feet, 2 inches carried the responsibilities of providing for her children. Having moved to Arizona, and then Wickenburg, her children grew up in the town they all called "home."

Oldest daughter Carmelita married a popular local boy, Manuel "Shorty" Macias, and she then became a grandma in 1954.

Emma worked for many years at the Rancho Grande Motel, and enjoyed employment and friendship with the Coxwell Family. After her retirement in the mid 1960s she moved to Anaheim, Calif. to be closer to her daughters Illa and Patricia. She entered the job market again as a personal assistant to a well-known family in the area, cooking, cleaning and helping to raise their children.

Emma returned to Wickenburg in 1988 and enjoyed seeing her many friends again, especially Lenore Bass, Claudina Contreras, Caroline Hershkowitz, and Concepcion Macias. Health problems moved her once again, to Glendale, Ariz., Glendale, Calif., and then finally to Ohio, where she lived close to her daughter Illa.

She passed away peacefully on Dec. 11, 2003 in Court House Manor, Washington Court House, Ohio.

Emma was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, daughter Carmelita Macias in 1976, and grandson Joey Castro in 2002.

She is survived by daughters Illa Sahlin, Patricia Alexander, and sons George and Neal Castro. Her 13 grandchildren: Julia Macias Brooks, Debbie Macias Griffiths, Mike, Frank and Alex Macias; Doug Bambridge, Jackie Bambridge Freeman, Dale Albrecht, Cindy Albrecht, Laurie Albrecht, David Castro, Gloria Leon, and Amanda Castro. Along with many great-grandchildren residing in Arizona, Oregon, California, Colorado, Illinois and Ohio.

She will be forever missed yet forever remembered in our hearts. Memorial services will take place after the holidays. Her ashes will be buried at the grave of her daughter Carmelita Macias in the Wickenburg Municipal Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anthony's Catholic Church in her memory.
