William Shuart born c. 1790 New Jersey son of Adolphus Shuart and Aeltje (Alida) Ackerman married 11 May 1811 (Paramus Reformed Church, Paramus, New Jersey) Hannah Wortendyke born 16 November 1789 baptized as Annatje (Dutch version of Hannah) 7 February 1790 (Kakiat Reformed Church) New Jersey, daughter of Reynier Wortendyke and Annatje (Hannah) Forshay. On the 1813 assessment list for Franklin Township, Bergen County, New Jersey, William was listed with 30 improved acres and 22 unimproved acres and with 25 improved acres and 13 unimproved acres in 1814. In 1816, 38 improved acres. He does not appear on later assessment lists in Franklin. William first appears on the 1830 assessment list (compiled fall of 1829) of Wells township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Enumerated in Wells in 1830 with two males under age five (b. 1826-30), one male of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), one male of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), one male of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-15), one male of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90), one female of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), two females of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), two females of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-15), and one female of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90). Hannah's brother Abraham Wortendyke and his wife Rachel Doremus also settled in Wells. Residence was in central eastern Wells near the South Creek Township line. Hannah listed as Hannah Shuart in petition for probate of her father's estate in 1836 (New York County Wills 76:10). William was enumerated in Wells in 1840 with one male of age five and under age ten (b. 1831-35), two males of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1826-30), two males of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1821-25), one male of age fifty and under age sixty (b. 1781-90), one female of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1826-30), one female of age twenty and under age thirty (b. 1811-20), and one female of age fifty and under age sixty (b. 1781-90). They sold their farm in 1848 to Andrew Price Bowman and Ann Margaret Case. Enumerated in Southport, Chemung County, New York in 1850, William age 60 and Hannah age 61, no occupation, with no children in their household. William enumerated in the 1855 state census of Southport, 6 years in the town, married, no occupation, Hannah not in the household. In December 1856, William was convicted of receiving stolen goods and sentenced to Auburn State prison for four years and six months. William enumerated in Auburn State Prison in 1860. Hannah died 25 June 1861 72 years 7 months and 9 days, memorial in Coryland Cemetery, Wells Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. William was enumerated in Hartwood township, Stafford County, Virginia in 1870, living alone, farmer, personal estate of $1,000, born New Jersey. Enumerated in the same township was son, Nery and family. William married 29 Aug 1873 in Stafford County, Jane Pheeps, age 53, single, born Stafford County, William son of A. & A. Shuart, age 83, widowed, farmer, born New Jersey. He is not the William Shuart who died in 1875 buried in Clarkstown, Rockland County, New York.
