He earned a M.A. degree in studio art while a full-time practicing obstetrician. He mastered taxidermy, then pursued painting in watercolor, acrylics and oils. He was national president of the American Physicians Art Association twice. He served on the board of MedArt, an international physicians art organization. His paintings were shown across the United States. He won many awards, including Best of Show in national art shows.
He was co-author of "The Stewarts of Amite County". He was an avid dancer and earned the Bronze Medal from Arthur Murray Dance Studios. He was a Mason and Shriner. He was past president of the Gloster Chamber of Commerce. He served as Junior Warden, Senior Warden and Vestry member of the Episcopal Church of the Mediator-Redeemer.
He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years, Eleanora "Nora" Norsworthy Stewart; his parents, Albert Adams Stewart and Florence Haney Stewart; two brothers, Barnell and Wallace Stewart; and four sisters, Edyce Alford, Eleanor Simmons, Yvonne Ferguson and Evy Jo Hutson.
He was survived by two sons, Dr. Lawrence "Larry" Edsel Stewart and wife Cynthia "Cindy" Reese Stewart of McComb, and Giles Norsworthy Stewart of New Orleans, LA; two daughters, Patricia "Patty" Susan Stewart of Jackson, MS and Sarah "Sally" Elizabeth Stewart Hester and husband Charles Hester of Starkville, MS; three brothers, Quentin Stewart and wife Marion of Terry's Creek, MS, William Stewart and wife Betty of Jackson, MS, and Claude Sanders and wife Faye of Gillsburg, MS; two sisters, Bessie Prescott and husband William of Terry's Creek, and Evelyn Blue and husband Alvin of Baton Rouge, LA; and 6 grandchildren.
