VIRGINIA BEACH - Clair F. "Ax" Axtell Jr., 65, of the 400 block of Barcelona Lane, a retired Navy chief warrant officer, died January 29, 1989, in a Portsmouth hospital.

Mr. Axtell, a native of Easton, Pa., was a Navy veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired from military service after 30 years.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge 1198, MacArthur Memorial Post 392 and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie V. Axtell; a daughter, Anna Stant of Virginia Beach; his mother, Esther D. McSweet of Sarasota, Fla; and a grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, by the Rev. Lee H. Beville. Moose rites will be accorded. Burial with military honors will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may join the family from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home.
