Memorial services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel. Jodi Engels, Chaplin will officiate the memorial service.
Visitation will be at the chapel on Saturday, prior to the service, starting at 1:00 p.m.
Burial will follow in the spring at Milbank Cemetery, Milbank, SD.
Joan known to so many as “JoAn” or “Jo” was born on February 26, 1963 to Walter Wallace and Olga Louise (Klepel) Schmeichel in Ortonville, MN. She was a graduate of Milbank High School in 1981. Joan was united in marriage to Kenneth George Bowers on June 12, 1981 and they later divorced.
Joan moved to Watertown, SD where she was employed at a variety of businesses, but for the past 2 years at the Casey’s General Store located on Hwy 20.
Joan was very active in the Watertown VFW Auxiliary Post 750, were she was Post President for 9 years, a Post Trustee and a District 4 JV President.
She enjoyed collecting angel and dolphin figurines, coloring with gel pens also known as an adult coloring book enthusiast, helping with the VFW Post 750 winter fish fries along with many of the VFW events and activities thru her years in Watertown, and most importantly spending time with her family and friends.
Joan is survived by her sister, Sharon (Arnie) Wellnitz, Milbank, SD; two brothers: Loren (Rita Meier) Schmeichel, Dick (Linda Heuer) Schmeichel, both of Milbank, SD; many nieces and nephews: Brenda (Morris) Riggin, Wayne (special friend Cindy Kim) Schmeichel, Kylan (Ashley) Meier, Tashal Meier, Shalya (Mike) Polanchek, Terry Wellnitz, Lee Wellnitz, Dean (Tiff) Wellnitz, Tammy (Jason) Wojahn, Leslie Schmeichel, Amanda (Mike) Steckelberg, Josh (Kari) Schmeichel; Significant other and his family: Mark Basack, Watertown, SD; Joshua McConnell, Jenna McConnell, Jolynn Hoeppner with many great nieces, nephews and friends. And let’s not forget her cute adorable fur baby “Casper”.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one nephew, Brian Lee Wellnitz, one niece, Anita Luean (Allen) Wellnitz and a sister-in-law Geraldine (Angerhofer) Schmeichel.
