Author. A writer of children's literature, she received the Newbery Medal for "Summer of the Swans" (1971). Born Betsy Cromer, she earned her degree in English from Queens College and began her writing career contributing short stories to magazines. Her first book "Capable" was published in 1962 and during the course of her career, she penned more than 60 works.
