GERKEN JAMES R. entered peacefully into rest at his San Leandro home on September 4, 2001. He was 83. Born in Iowa on August 27, 1918, James was a retired aircraft mechanic for Alameda Naval Air Station. He had proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. James was a long time resident of San Leandro, parishioner of St. John's Catholic church, and active in the American Legion, NARFE and AARP. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, fishing and hunting. James is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary "Peggy'' Gerken of San Leandro; daughters, Mary K. Mendez of Cottonwood, Idaho and Margaret Ann Goldsmith of Gault, CA; brother, Giles E. Gerken of Martel, Ca; sister, Mary P. Bilstein of Dyersville, Iowa; 4 grandchildren and many cherished friends. Visitation for James will be 1 to 5 PM on Thursday at Grissom's San Lorenzo Chapel/Mortuary, 267 E. Lewelling Blvd., San Lorenzo. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM on Friday at St. John's Catholic Church, 264 E. Lewelling Blvd., San Lorenzo. James will be laid to rest at San Joaquin National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to St. John's Building fund, 264 E. Lewelling, San Lorenzo, CA 94580. GRISSOM'S CHAPEL & MORTUARY 510-278-2800 www.grissomsmortuary.com.
