FASZHOLZ RICHARD WILLIAM JR. (September 24, 1925 - August 21, 2001). Richard "Dick" Faszholz, long-time resident of Berkeley and a retired UC Berkeley police officer, passed away on August 21, 2001, at the age of 75. He was a man who laughed deeply and often, was proud of his Faszholz family legacy, was loyal and generous to family and friends. Despite health limitations in recent years and the death of his wife two years ago, he found enjoyment in each day. Born in St. Louis to Richard W. and Marnie (Krenning) Faszholz, he was the oldest of six children. The family moved to berkeley in 1938, where Dick and his siblings grew up on Yolo Street. A student of the Berkeley schools until early high school, Dick graduated from Lutheran's Concordia High School, Oakland. During his youth and into adulthood, he excelled at athletics. He played basketball regularly at Live Oak Park; it was there that he met the girl he would eventually marry, Shyrlie Patricia Brown. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at 17 and served during WWII. After the war, he married his sweetheart on January 18, 1947. To this union, three children were born: Kris Keeney of Summerfield, Missouri, Rick Faszholz of Berkeley, Jan Ralford of Lubbock, Texas. He remained an active athlete,playing AAU basketball for the Oakland Bittners and the Oakland Blue and Gold teams with some notable successes: they won the AAU National Championship in 1949 and earned gold medals in the Pan American Games in 1951. He continued to play basketball on the UCPD team, and participated in Police Olympics. Dick's career as a UC Berkeley police officer spanned 30 years, during which time, he saw many changes, particularly during the 60's. His many friendships with fellow employees remain to this day. After retirement, Dick and Pat moved to Red Bluff where they enjoyed a small-town lifestyle, including memorable get-together with neighbors, friends and family. Dick is survived by his siblings: John, Eugene, David and Thomas Faszholz, and Katherine Rasmussen, by his children and their families: Kris and Wendell Keeney, Rick, Maria and Richard Faszholz, Jan, Hayley, Alex, Adam, Andrew and Cristin Raiford, Heather and Randy Gauthier, and by a host of extended family and friends. We are so thankful for the countless ways he has enriched our lives with his infectious sense of humor and the big, tender heart, which he displayed unceasingly. We willingly put him in God's hands now and expect the laughter in heaven will be stepped up a notch.
