Whitehead Kempland was an Ensign in the 25th Bengal Infantry near Monghyr (Munger) in the state of Bihar, India. He perished when his boat overturned in the Ganges River and his body was never recovered. This is documented in an 1842 issue of "The Asiatic Journal and Monthly Register for British and Foreign Indian, China, and Australasia". His death was also mentioned in a letter written by his father, Major George Arthur Kempland, to another son, Arthur Kempland. This letter is privately owned.
