President of Egypt. Born Muhammad Hosni El Sayed Mubarak in Kafr El-Meselha, Monufia Governate, Egypt, he served as president of Egypt from October 1981 to February 2011, and as vice president from April 1972 until April 1975. He rose to the presidency following the military led assassination of President Anwar El Sadat. Prior to serving in the government, he was a career military officer in the Egyptian Air Force. He entered military service in 1949 following graduation from the Egyptian Military Academy. Trained as a pilot in the former Soviet Union, he eventually rose to the rank of Egyptian Defense Minister and Air Chief Marshal. He is credited with expanding the number of skilled pilots and navigators, leading up to the Israeli Six Day war in 1967, and was promoted to the rank of Air Marshall, following the 1973 October War with Israel. As president, he successfully fought for Egypt’s readmission to the Arab League, following Egypt’s ouster from the political body resulting from a signed peace accord with the Israeli Government in 1979, and served as an important ally in the U.S. led Gulf War coalition against Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990. He was removed from power in February 2011, following a pro-democracy movement that had swept throughout the Middle East. Two months later he was arrested on charges of corruption, abuse of power and using the Egyptian military to brutally murder and suppress peaceful anti-government protesters during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. In August 2011 he was found guilty by an Egyptian high court and sentenced to life in prison. While imprisoned, he reportedly suffered a number of strokes, leaving him comatose and in critical condition. Following a retrial in 2015 in which he again was found guilty on grounds of corruption, he was subsequently acquitted by the nation’s high court and released from prison in March 2017. He was buried near the capital city of Cairo, in a private family burial plot.
