James Franklin Spence, age 86, of 130 Mallard Street, Grandy, NC died Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center. Born in Harnett County, NC on December 18, 1933 to the late Franklin P. Spence and Ethel McLean Spence, he was the widower of Daniele André Ghilardi Spence who preceded him in death by fifteen days. Mr. Spence served his country honorably as an infantryman in the U. S. Army during the Korean War, and then served three tours in Vietnam in the U. S. Air Force until his retirement. Following his military service, Mr. Spence served North Carolina as an Alcohol Law Enforcement Agent until his retirement in 1995.

He is survived by a daughter, Tania L. Spence (Jason Taylor) of Grandy, NC; son, Frank Spence (Dactoy) of Fayetteville, NC; two sisters, Doris Mozelle Tyndall and Ethylene Shannon-Wood; four grandchildren, Ryan Spence, Nicholas Spence, Kyle Taylor, and Lydia Taylor; and three great grandchildren, Eloise Spence, Evelyn Spence, and Alexander Spence.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 24, 2020, at Twiford Memorial Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Eugene McLawhorn officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service and at other times at the residence. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is serving the Spence family.
