Walter Hines, 54, died suddenly on Sunday, July 29, 2007 at his residence in Tucumcari.

Mr. Hines was born June 22, 1953 in Tucumcari where he grew up and graduated from Tucumcari High School. He later played football at El Dorado Junior College in El Dorado, Kan., and then at Missouri Western University. He became a member of the Kansas City Chiefs football team but because of a serious shoulder injury, his career came to an end.

He worked for 18 years at the Friskies food plant in St. Joseph, Mo. Mr. Hines returned to Tucumcari in 2000 to be with his family and most recently had learned team roping through his brothers and friend, Freddie Ortiz.

Surviving Mr. Hines are three brothers, Vernon Hines of Tucumcari, James Hines of Albuquerque and Bobby Hines of Mineral Wells, Texas, a sister Merine McCoy of Arlington, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Birdie Hines.

Pastor of Father's Forge, Eddie Martis, will officiate at the services. Burial will be at the Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery.
