GREENSBORO, N.C. – Mr. Shala Henry Arant (Buddy), 87, formerly of Columbia, SC, went to be with his Lord on January 26, 2016, after a brief illness. Buddy was born on May 13, 1928, in Orangeburg, SC, to the late Shala Henry and Mary Lou Arant. Buddy attended Columbia City Schools and the University of South Carolina where he excelled in baseball as a first baseman and was subsequently drafted by the New York Giants. Following his service in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, Buddy married his high school sweetheart, Hulda Cochran of Columbia. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage. Buddy was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Columbia where after 67 years of service in various leadership roles he was elected Life Deacon. He was actively involved in the community through his membership in the Lions Club, the Sertoma Club and the Exchange Club. He also served many years as a Scoutmaster and baseball coach. In 1993 he retired after a long career as sales manager with Georgia Pacific Paper Company. Buddy is survived by his wife, Hulda; his daughter, Carol Matthews (John); grandchildren, Michael Matthews, Katharine Moffat (Tony), Melanie Jennings (Blake); and great-grandson, Weston Moffat. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Lou Rhoades (Bill); nephew, Ray Rhoades (Martha) and niece, Mary Fern Blair (Brian). A celebration of Buddy’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2016, at Boyce Chapel, First Baptist Church Columbia. The family will greet visitors in Ellis Hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Columbia, 1306 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC 29201 or First Baptist Church of Greensboro, 1000 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27401.
