Born in Berlin Germany, Ulrich Leupold was the son of Anton Wilhelm Leupold (1868-1940), an organist in one of Berlin’s largest churches, and Gertrud, née Igel, an opera singer and voice teacher. Ulrich earned a PhD in musicology at the University of Berlin.

In 1938, Ulrich emigrated to the United States and lived briefly in Toledo, Ohio, before moving to Kitchener, Ontario, in 1939. He was ordained that year.

Ulrich married Gertrude Daber in 1942 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Kitchener, Ontario.

Reverend Leupold served as a pastor until 1945. From 1945 to 1970, he was Professor of Music and New Testament at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary, serving as Dean during most of those years. He was appointed Principal in 1969. He authored, arranged, and composed numerous works.

Wilfrid Laurier University's Leupold Residence is named in his honour.
