Mary Pauline Rankin McCray was born November 16, 1930 in Franklin, Alabama to the late Mr. Johnnie Rankin and Mrs. Laura Jane Rankin.

She was educated in the Escambia County School System in Pensacola, Florida. Upon graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, Mary married the late Henry McCray and they resided in Beaumont, Texas. From their union, three children were born: Johnnie Earl McCray, Leslie “Rick” McCray, and Virginia Ronell McCray Minter.

Mary later relocated to Miami, Florida where she obtained a Master’s License in Cosmetology from the Cesar’s School of Beauty. She later developed a desire to help others and decided to pursue a career in nursing. She became a Scrub Nurse at Miami Heart Institute and Mount Sinai Hospital just to name a few. After Mary retired, she became an entrepreneur and started her own Assisted Living Home where she cared for numerous Senior Citizens.

After years of caring for others, grandchildren included, Mary decided it was time to retire to Pensacola, Florida, where she enjoyed sewing, fishing and participating in various social clubs. She also joined First Corinthian Baptist Church where she loved to Praise the Lord. She continued her dedication of serving others and was very active in the church.

Mary truly enjoyed retirement and had a desire to relocate to Americus, Georgia. Upon arriving, she attended Bethesda Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Ferrell M. Malone, Sr. She later attended The Restoration Church of Americus under the leadership of Pastor George F. Edge; where she was affectionately called “The Mother of the Church”. She was well loved, and well respected by her family, friends, and church community.

Mary’s health declined over the past few years, and prevented her from attending church and family reunions, both of which she truly enjoyed. Before the Lord called her home, she was visited by her two sons and three very close cousins of Pensacola, Florida. This truly settled her spirit and on March 18, 2019, Mary was at peace and wanted to go home to be with the Lord and her beloved son, Araan Alexander Shepard.
