Elizabeth Ogaryova-Herzen, the seventeen-year-old daughter of Herzen and Ogaryova-Tuchkova, committed suicide due to an unrequited love for the forty-four-year-old Frenchman in Florence in December 1875. Suicide had a resonance, Dostoevsky wrote about it in the essay “Two Suicides”.
