Albert Schrempf, 99, founding church member
NEWBURYPORT -- Albert L. Schrempf, 99, of 77 High St., died early yesterday morning at Brigham Manor Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Alice T. (Gibbs) Schrempf, who died in 1979.
He was born in Newburyport on Feb. 22, 1896, the son of the late Charles P. and Matilda (Lewis) Schrempf. He was an outstanding baseball player as a young man.
He worked in several shoe shops in the area, including Marston Shoe, Louis Shoe and Martin Tikelis Shoe.
Mr. Schrempf was a founding member and deacon of the Newburyport Assembly of God.
He had long been a member of Warren Lodge AF&AM and Friendship Chapter Order of Eastern Star No. 58, both of Amesbury. He was a member of Laurel Grange of West Newbury.
He is survived by three sons, George Schrempf of Haverhill, Gordon G. Schrempf of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Albert A. Schrempf of Newburyport; three daughters, Alice M. Rizzo of Kensington, N.H., Evelyn M. "Tessie" Williams of Pennsylvania and Marion J. Fortier of Amesbury; a sister, Zelma D. Lachowicz of Newburyport; 27 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Harold L. Schrempf, who died in 1980.
Funeral service will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Newburyport Assembly of God, followed by burial in Belleville Cemetery.
Calling hours at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Funeral Home, 35 Green St., will be held today 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The officers and members of Warren Lodge will conduct Masonic services at 6:30.
