COOPER, VICTORIA YVONNE (AGE 87) OF FORT WASHINGTON, MD

On Tuesday, February 18, 2020, Victoria Yvonne Singletary Cooper was called home. Victoria was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother (memaw), great grandmother, and friend. She was born on Sunday, January 15, 1933, in Lake City, South Carolina. Victoria's parents, Warren and Sally Singletary had 9 children. She was the youngest daughter and the third to last child. She grew up in a loving home surrounded by the teachings of God. Her first church home was Westley Chapel United Methodist Church in Lake City, where she accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age. While attending high school, she was a proud member of the majorette team at Lake City High School. She often strutted her stuff around the house, showing her family her many smooth moves as a member of that team.

Prior to graduating Victoria took the bold step of leaving South Carolina to travel to Washington, DC. On arriving in D.C. she lived with her sister Sylvia and her husband Arlona. She attended and graduated her last year of high school in Washington, DC. Over the years she had a few jobs while living in DC including as an employee of the Government Printing Office.

Victoria had five children, who were very special to her and she loved each of them fiercely, protectively, and unconditionally. She married her husband, Theodore Cooper on August 5, 1968 and shared her life with him for 52 years. She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church in Newburg, Maryland for over 60 years. She loved to sing, especially songs of the Lord. Victoria was the founder and president of the Gospel Traveleers of Shiloh United Methodist Church and was a member of that singing group from 1974 to 2013. Over the years she held many positions within the church, some of which were: Lay Leader; Pastor Parish Relations Committee; Chancel and Gospel Choir; Evangelistic ministries; Historic Society; Methodist Women’s Society; and she attended Bible Study regularly. In addition to her membership at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Victoria has been an associate member of Grace United Methodist Church since June of 2014. Victoria was one of the “behind-the-scenes” members who always remembered others on special occasions, she regularly visited and ministered to the sick and shut-in. She could be found in the church kitchen coordinating and cooking for fund raisers as well as for church dinner days. Affectionately known as “mama or grandma”, in addition to being mother to her children, many have adopted her as their mother. She can always be counted on to lend a helping hand. Victoria has always had an open-door policy. If you came to visit her, she showed her love for you through her great love of cooking. Victoria had a special bond with her grandson, Melvin, and took care of him, along with his parents and granddad from the tender age of two months until she went on to Glory.

Anyone who met her knows that Victoria Cooper was truly an angel walking on earth. She was a caring, loving, and giving person, all qualities she instilled in each of her children. She leaves behind the following: surviving siblings, Sylvia McGill, husband Arlona and Warren Singletary, wife Shirley; preceding her in death parents Sally and Warren Singletary; siblings, Willard Singletary, wife Marie; Annabelle Maxwell, husband Wilbur; Frances Gamble, husband Oscar; James Singletary, wife Naomi; Alward Singletary, wife Louise; Dexter Singletary, wife Evelyn; loving husband, Theodore T.
