Darrell was born in Ada, MN on September 3, 1929 to Ervin and Adeline (Finke) Aasland. He attended school in Ada, Detroit Lakes and Mahnomen. He graduated from Mahnomen High School in 1948. While in high school, he earned letters in basketball and football.

After high school, he worked for L. B. Hartz and Mahnomen Dairy.

In 1952, he joined the Army and served during the Korean War. Upon his discharge in 1954, he returned to Mahnomen and worked for the County Engineer.

He married his love, Violet Boen on November 10, 1956. They raised three sons and through love, trust and family, they celebrated 63 years of marriage.

The couple moved to Fargo in 1956 as Darrell accepted a position in the engineering department of the Cass County Road Department. He worked there for 35 years, retiring in 1991. In retirement, he worked part time for the Road Department for several years and for his friend Lambert Vogel.

Darrell’s faith was very important to him. He was a long-time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He served on the Board of Elders, Trustees and Usher Teams. In addition, he was a dedicated member of the “Fixer-Uppers”.

He enjoyed sports, woodworking, restoring furniture and making lefse. He competed in bowling at Red River Lanes for many years.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Violet; Children, Brent (Kristi), Brian (special friend Abby), Blair (Shelly), all of Fargo. Grandchildren, Ashtin Hopkins and Kaitlyn and Elyssa Aasland, sister, Virginia Stack.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, LeRoy and Bertram.

Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M., with a prayer service at 7 P.M., Friday, February 21, 2020 at Hanson-Runsvold

Funeral Home, Fargo, ND. Visitation will continue from 1-2 P.M., followed by a funeral service at 2 P.M., Saturday, February 22, 2020 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND.

Burial will be at Fargo National Vet. Cemetery.
