STELLA RUTH BALLEW FRANKLIN

On the evening of February 15th, Stella Ballew Franklin left this earth wrapped in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, succumbing to a lengthy fight with cancer.  Stella was born on January 4th, 1939 in the rural Arkansas township of Tichnor.  Born to James Garland Ballew and wife Julia Brewer Ballew, her parents were hard working and loving.  She had two sisters Gladys Marie and Betty Jean Ballew.  The younger, Betty was taken by illness shortly after her first birthday.

The family later moved to Bossier City, La where Stella graduated from high school.   Shortly after graduation, she was employed by the Kroger Company working in the Accounting department.  It was there that she met and later married the love of her life Bobby Morgan Franklin.  Bob was also employed  by Kroger.  Their relationship began from a bet made by Stella with one of her co-workers.  Her first impression was that Bob was “highly opinionated, self-centered and egotistical”.  Stella bet her co-worker that she would get him to ask her out and then bring him down a notch or two.  Fourteen months later they married.  Stella was forced to leave Kroger due to marital employment policies.  She worked for “temp” services, babysat and even mowed yards to help support them while Bob continued to work for Kroger and completed his accounting degree at the University of Houston.

After graduating with his degree, Bob was employed by Union 76 Oil Company, one of the primary producers at the time.   A short time later, he was assigned to the international division and the family moved to California.  Over the next fifteen years they would live in the Philippines, tour Thailand and serve Union Oil throughout their Eastern holdings.  They returned to the Continental US for a short stint in California before being transferred to Wyoming to work with the mining division.  In 1982 they returned to Houston where Bob finished out his career and later retired in 1992.  Only five months after retirement, Bob was taken home with complications due to respiratory issues.

They were blessed with one child James Copeland Franklin in December of 1964.  He was truly a blend of cultures as many of his formative years were spent overseas.  After graduation from college in Wyoming, James married and settled in Colorado.  They were blessed with a son, Christopher Morgan.  In July of 2016, James also preceded his mother in death as he was taken home at the age of fifty-two.

For Stella, family was at the center of her being.  She looked forward to each call and each opportunity to interact with them.  Whether it was a simple phone call, a trip or a dinner out she was always ready to go.  With the early passing of her husband and son she leaned heavily on friends and her church family.  She often referred to them as her “framily”.  She would tell you they were not quite “family” but a whole lot more than “friend”.

Stella is survived by grandson: Christopher Morgan Franklin;  Nephews:  John Kenneth Stevens and wife Cydney,  James Robert Stevens and wife Patty;   David Eugene Stevens and wife Patricia ;  Edwin Wayne and wife Divina;  Christopher Michael Stevens and April;  Robert Hooper and wife Donna.  Nieces:  Wendy Kay and Clay Hooten;  Becky Lynn Bailey.  She is also survived by numerous great nephews, nieces and  her dear friends and care givers Glenda, Robbie and Bruce Jeffcoat.
