John Meisner was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (née Weitzel) Meisner. He was born and raised in East Zorra Township, Oxford County, Ontario, where his father was a farmer.

John was a brother of Adam, Mary, and Catherine.

John married Emma Loebsack on June 15, 1910, in Sebastopol (a small community just north of Tavistock), Ontario.

The 1911 census finds John and Emma living with John’s parents in Tavistock, Ontario. Here, John and Jacob operated the Commercial Hotel — Jacob purchased the property around 1908.

By the time of the 1921 census, John, Emma, and a nine-year-old daughter, Marie, lived at 46 John Street, Waterloo, Ontario. (Jacob had retired from the hotel business in 1916.) John was employed by a tire company.
