Author, Scientist, Folk Figure. Otto Plath was the father of poet Sylvia Plath, and the subject of one of her most famous poems, "Daddy." He died when Sylvia was eight of complications from diabetes. Thinking his symptoms indicated cancer, Otto neglected to treat his diabetes until it was too late. He taught zoology and German at Boston University, and was a noted expert on bees; he wrote the 1934 book "Bumblebees and Their Ways."
