Jack, 85, of Crystal, passed away on Tuesday. January 28, 2020. He was born on the family farm in New Haven Township to William J. Barnes Sr. and Esther May White, along with his twin, Janet Olive (Bidwell).

Jack attended County School where he relied heavily on Janet’s help! He graduated from Carson City High School in 1953. After graduation, he worked on the family farm for one year, until, in 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. When he came home from Boot Camp, he married his sweetheart and life partner Patsy Johnston, on August 24, 1954. Together they had three daughters and raised them on their farm in Crystal Township.

Jack worked at Gibson’s (later, Electrolux) in Greenville until his retirement in 1993. Jack always farmed, even while working in the factory. He raised cash crops, hogs, and, later, beef cattle. In October, 1993, he lost his left hand in a farming accident. That did not stop him from continuing to farm, though.

Jack and Patsy enjoyed travelling, camping, mushrooming, hunting, and fishing—especially the special fishing trips to Alaska and Canada. Above all else, his family was the most thing to Jack, and he will be missed dearly by all.

Jack is survived by his wife, Patsy; daughters, Kay and Fred Hargett, Donna and Bradley Shinabarger, and Peggy and Stevan Hartman; grandchildren, Nickolas (Danielle), Andrew (Emily), and Devon (Will) Hargett, Jared and Jenny (Andy) Becher, Dustin (Jessica) Shinabarger, Walter (Erica) and Chad Hartman; and 10 ½ great grandchildren; brothers, Mike (Carol) Barnes, Robert (Patsy) Barnes; sisters, Janet Bidwell and Idajean (John) Krantz.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Howard, Hubert, William Jr., and Chuck Soules; sisters, Mary Stearns, Arlene Freed, and Margaret Kipp; grandson, Josh Hargett; and, son-in-law, Robert Becher.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 31, 2020 at Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home, Crystal, MI, pastor George Showers presiding. Interment will be in Crystal Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a Special Thanks for the care from Laurels of Carson City.
