Robert "Joshua" Stinnett was the youngest child of Ella and Hobart Stinnett. He grew up in southern California with siblings Ron and Barbara. An older brother, Larry, died before Joshua was born.

In 1963, Joshua married Peggy Allison. They welcomed daughter Holly in 1965, and adopted son Jason seven years later. They later divorced.

Joshua moved to Oregon in the mid-1970s and met Janelle in 1977. In the years following, the couple welcomed four children: Jessica, Zaneta, Aaron and Nathan. The couple settled in Jewell, Oregon, and remained together until his death.

Joshua was a spiritual person who enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, cutting wood, and picking moss and wild mushrooms. Woodworking was another of his favorite hobbies. In his younger years, he worked in photography and as a journeyman meatcutter.
