After being discharged from the USAF he relocated to Denver, CO where he met and eventually married Barbara Jean Goodwin who passed in 2002. He was a father to Tyrone Mason (Verleria Mason), Kevin Mason, Walton Charles (Danyelle Charles) & Edward C. Charles (Carlotta Charles) and a father figure to many other young men in the neighborhood. His grandchildren: Justin Mason, Nicolette Yagelski, Adam Mason, Genevieve Slater, Krystal Nicole Ashford, Ishmail Ameen, Jasmine Beezley, Alex Douglas-Mason, Addison Douglas-Mason, Daryus Charles, Camron Charles, Annaka Douglas-Mason and a host of great-grandchildren remember him as a loving and giving person.
By profession, Charles was employed at Greyhound as a baggage handler and retired after several years in 1999. His co-workers will remember there was always a smile on his face.
In his leisure time, Charles liked to listen to music and to entertain, which was evident by the multiple social clubs that he joined over the years. He liked art and often took art classes in order to hone his skills. He had a magnetic personality and was loved by all that new him. He always had a joke to tell and enjoyed making people laugh.
One of his favorite bible passages was Psalm 23 and it often comforted him in times of distress. He was in good spirits all the way up until he took his last breath as he sang and talked about being bored hours before his home going.
