Sarah Jane Matthes was the daughter of Forrest and Harriett Ott.

Preferring to be called Jane, she was born September 1, 1942, in Harrisonville, MO. and has two sisters, Novella Ott Perrin and DeeAnn Herde.

Jane graduated from Lee's Summit High School in 1960 and attended Central Missouri State University, earning a teaching degree in secondary education, with an elementary teaching certificate.

She began her career at Russellville High School in Russellville, MO., teaching speech and drama. She returned to Lee's Summit when she married William (Bill) Matthes on August 2, 1964, and began teaching at Hazel Grove Elementary School in Lee's Summit. She left her teaching passion to stay home with her two children, Mark William Matthes and Julie Jane Lane, through their elementary school. She soon returned to teaching elementary students at Summit Christian Academy in Lee's Summit, where she became principal.

Jane was a participant and leader in many activities. She was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church, Lee's Summit, and served many years as Outreach Coordinator, was member of Joy Club and many other committees; was president of the International Reading Association; program chair of Delta Kappa Gamma (a sorority for outstanding teachers); a volunteer for the Lee's Summit Hospital Auxiliary, Lee's Summit Police Department, Lee's Summit One Good Meal, which she helped start, and Lee's Summit Mental Health Clinic.

Jane was one of the kindest and most giving persons you would ever encounter. She offered her time, talent, money, and service to anyone who was in need.

After a long battle with Alzheimer's disease, she passed away February 12, 2020.
