North Carolina Governor. He served as Governor of North Carolina from 1825 to 1827. One of his first acts after being elected was to urge the General Assembly the importance of the Public Schools and in the same year an act passed entitled "An Act to Create a fund for the establishment of Common Schools." Some time previous to 1836, he bought land in Texas. He was on his way to visit this farm before moving there. On his way and by stage coach he stopped at Salisbury, North Carolina to care for some court business and while there met up with his cousin Robert Burton from Lincoln Co, North Carolina. He decided to visit Robert's home for a few days so they headed to Lincoln Co stopping at the Wayside Inn for the night. Here Gov Burton was taken by cramps and died within a few hours. His last words were "Oh, my dear wife and children! Lord, receive my Spirit. His death occurred April 21, 1836 and his remains are buried at Unity Churchyard, Lincoln Co, North Carolina.
