On January 6, 1952, Felix Gilbert, Sr. and Mattie Will Page Gilbert welcomed a new son, whom they named Charlie Lee. He was the fifth child born to this union.

At an early age he professed Christ and was baptized at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. C. L. Daughtry. As a young boy Charlie attended Drew School in Lanett, Alabama and in 1969 he graduated from Rehobeth High School, where he enjoyed playing on the basketball team. After graduating high school, he attended Opelika Technical College in Opelika, Alabama and Southern Union State Community College in Wadley, Alabama.

He was employed for many years at West Point Stevens, Shawmut Mill. However, he was best known for his profession as a Barber. His shop was often a place where many men came not only for haircuts but for socializing and Bible discussions. Charlie had a love for photography, taking pictures at many local events. He loved children so much that he volunteered to be Santa’s Helper during the Christmas Season at various locations in the community. He also took great pride in having a well manicured lawn as well as many beautiful flowers. He was an avid reader, collecting a library of books over the years which included inspirational subjects, biographies and biblical teachings. Charlie was a mentor and father figure to so many young men and women, playing an important role and making a positive impact on their lives.

On November 1, 1980, Charlie was united in Holy Matrimony to Deborah Hill. To their union, two children were born, Charles “Chachi” and Reagan, joining their older sister Christie who was born during a previous marriage.

In 2004 Charlie united with Evening Spring Baptist Church in Lanett, Alabama under the leadership of Rev. Elijah Jackson, Jr. He was a former Sunday School Superintendent and served as a faithful member until his death. When he wasn’t attending Evening Spring, he enjoyed attending Sunday School (often reviewing the lesson), Bible Study and Church Services at St. John Baptist Church, New Love Union Baptist Church and Pilgrim Baptist Church where Pastor Trammell, Pastor Poole and Pastor James, respectively, and their church families, welcomed him with open arms.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Mollie Mae Gilbert, Felix Gilbert, Jr., Maureen Hargett and Mary Varner; and, by a grandson, Anthony Gilbert. On Monday, September 10, 2018 while surrounded by loved ones, God sent His loving angels to give him eternal rest.
