OBITUARY -
Barbara Ann McManus, passed away on January 31, 2020. She was born on 17 May 1928, to George Mahlon Gerber and Esther Wihelmina Johnson, in Monroe, Oregon. She was preceded in death by both her parents and husbands, and by siblings, Chester, Norman, Ralph, Lucille, Irene, Wallace and Donna. She is survived by her younger brother George Gerber, and all six of her own children: Richard McManus (Irene, son Sean), Gail Mezger (Skip, daughter Sarah (Zachariah, sons Tiernan and Cian) and son Darren (Vernica, son Darren Jr.), Rhonda Keily (Steve, son Jacob (Veronica, sons Charlie and Vincent) and daughter Andrea (Michael, sons Wyatt and James Jacob)), Paula McManus (Nikolaus, son Josef), David McManus and Daniel McManus (Rebecca, daughter Kelli Oncken (Josh, sons Luke and Caleb).
Barbara's parents homesteaded in North Dakota until just prior to her birth in 1928. She started life in a log cabin in Oregon with no electricity or running water. They bathed in a metal wash tub by the wood stove on Saturday nights. For entertainment, the kids climbed trees, waded in the creed, rode the cow "Betsy," walked on home-made stilts, and raided the neighbor's apple orchard. Clothes were hand washed in metal tubs or in the river (her mom fell in and almost drowned once). The next day was spent ironing with a hot iron heated over the wood stove.
After her older siblings left home, Barbara, younger brother George and her parents traveled during WWII working in the on conservation corps projects. She attended junior high in Okanogan (where her dad helped build the grade school), and graduated high school in Bremerton (where her dad worked as a plumber at the Shipyards and they lived in housing barracks).
Barbara met and married husband Charles Norman McManus in May, 1947. Norman's father was a decorated crane operator at the Shipyards during the war. Norman himself was an Ordained Minister (1941) of the Calvary Pentecostal Church, and they met at church and Barbara taught Sunday School. Their first two children were born in Bremerton, the third in Port Angeles, and the last three were born in Mr. Vernon. They moved to Ballard in 1960. Norman McManus died of a heart attack at age 48 in 1969. Barbara raised her six children alone after that. The children all finished high school in Seattle, and the older four graduated college.
Barbara waitressed at the Wharf Restaurant for over 20 years, where she met Edward Kuma, a retired mason. They married in 1984. She retired with him, and they resided in his home in Seattle and his Orcas Island retreat and they gardened together until his death only a few short years later. She then bought the Lynnwood home in 1989, where she lived another 30 years. She took cross-country motor home trips with Curly and sister Lucille, several cruises with her sisters and children, and many vacations to Hawaii and Mexico. She and the "girls" from the Wharf played cards together weekly. She was a member of the Shoreline Community Church. She kept cooking for her family and friends and hosting family gatherings well into her 80s. She lived at home until last Christmas, when she could no longer walk. She spent her last year cared for at Rosewood Court Memory Care Center in Edmonds, where she passed having survived to the age 91, 8-½ months.
Funeral Services will be held at Evergreen Washelli, 11111 Aurora Avenue North, in Seattle, on Sunday, February 23, 2020, viewing 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., burial to follow.
