On February 2, 2020, J Maurice Duderstadt, 77, passed away surrounded by family and friends at home in Lago Vista, Texas.

J is preceded in death by his mother, Louise Maier Duderstadt; father, M. E. Duderstadt.

J is survived by his wife, Bonnie Schroeder; son, Jason Duderstadt with fiancé Andrea Ayala and grandchildren Gillian, Andrew, and Ava; son, Kirk Duderstadt and wife Cindy, with grandchildren, Kaleb and Kayia; daughter, Vicki Miertschin and husband Keith, and grandchildren Logan, Sienna and Kylie; son, Charles Schroeder and wife Erin with grandchildren Brooke and Grant; sons, Steven Schroeder and Kevin Schroeder; brother, David Duderstadt and wife Susie; brother, Alex Duderstadt and wife Janie with niece Kelly and nephews David and Todd.

J was born on March 24, 1942 in Crane, Texas, to M. E. Duderstadt and Louise Maier Duderstadt. He grew up in Fredericksburg, TX. He graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1960.

A veteran of the Vietnam War, J served as an anti-Submarine Warfare Technician in the United States Navy from January ’64 to December ’67. J was consistently commended for outstanding performance, professionalism, exceptional knowledge and skill. He was valued and respected by both his superiors and fellow shipmates and noted as a “distinct asset to the morale of the entire squadron.”

He married Terri Detjen in 1971 and they had two sons, Jason and Kirk.

In 1976, he embarked upon his plumbing career in Lago Vista, Texas, and opened his own company “Duder’s Plumbing” in 1984. He was incredibly well known throughout the area for his excellence in his trade.
He retired in 2017, however he could frequently be found helping fix a neighbor’s leak here, or changing a friend’s sink there for the next few years.

He was a charter member of the Lago Vista Lions Club, and also served in the Lago Vista Volunteer Fire Department for a time.

J was active in 12 step recovery for over 30 continuous years. Throughout this time he was an integral part of a group in Jonestown, which is still thriving today. Friends frequently comment that some of his most memorable qualities are his love for helping others and commitment to recovery. By living the program he showed others the blessings available to those who choose to continue the path. He will continue to support the lives he touched for years to come.

In 1993, he met the love of his life while dancing, Bonnie Schroeder, who would eventually become his wife.

J began attending church camp at the HEB Foundation camp on the Frio River in Leakey, Texas in 1994. He would be a permanent fixture there twice a year from then on, helping to touch the hearts of many and bring them and himself closer to God.

There were a few things that J loved to eat above all else. Almost anyone who knew him knew of his love for ice cream. He always had a bowl of M&Ms sitting on the kitchen table to try to satisfy his sweet tooth. He could be found almost every Wednesday night sharing a steak with Bonnie and friends at Texas Roadhouse.

J had a number of hobbies he loved to partake in on a regular basis. Ever since he was a child, J could be found every fall deer hunting. He enjoyed fishing and looked forward to deep sea fishing every year with family. These excursions frequently fueled the biannual fish fry gatherings he and Bonnie would host. When his body was more limber and resilient, J enjoyed snow skiing and knee boarding. One of his favorite passions was country and western dancing. J and Bonnie could be found almost every weekend cutting a rug at local dances or at lessons. Many people knew J from his signature boots and hat. J had a fondness for playing card games with family and friends and had a standing schedule of nights that were carved out for doing so. Later in life, J began to enjoy trips abroad, some of his favorites being Alaska and Ireland.

J will be remembered fondly by many. He always had a positive attitude, no matter what. Regardless of the complications brought on by his illness, he never complained. J had a work ethic unparalleled; he went over and above and jumped in to make sure things were always taken care of, often things people never even noticed. He believed in service – to his fellow human beings, to his country, and to his God.

The family suggests no flowers and instead would like memorials to be made to the American Cancer Society or Rolling Hills Community Church,6201 Lohmans Ford Road, Lago Vista, Texas 78645 or the Yellow House Foundation, 120 Commercial Parkway, Cedar Park, Texas 78613
