Joe was a carpenter by trade. In 1894 he married Mary H Barris (1897-1907). They were the parents of:

• William Barris (1895-1916) did not marry, no children;
• Marion Charlotte (1896-1982) in 1922 married William Charles Williams (1893-1954), 2 children;
•Sarah Oxley (1900-1981) in 1920 married Charles Frederick Sindlinger (1892-1956), 6 children;
• Clyde Kesber (1903-1923) did not marry, no children.

Joe appears to have become estranged from his surviving children in the late 1910s. He was said to have gone west to seek his fortune and was never heard from again. It appears that his siblings never learned his fate.
