George Wren Harrel, A memorial service, celebrating the life will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 11, 2010 at First United Methodist Church of Winnfield.

George was born June 7, 1947 and passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on September 8, 2010. He graduated valedictorian of his high school class at Winnfield High School in 1965. He attended Virginia Military Institute for one year and then completed his education by graduating Magna Cum Laude with a degree in economics from Rice Unversity, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

George served his country in the United States Navy from 1970-1974. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, George returned home to Winnfield where he began work in the family business Harrel Builders Supply. He remained there with his partner Tracy Harrel, Jr., until 1996 at which time he moved to Natchitoches and opened Natchitoches Lumber Yard with his brother Tommy. George worked in Natchitoches with his son, Jonathan, and his nephews Trey and Todd and after closing in 2000, he moved to Monroe where he worked in the insurance business. George continued to work as an insurance agent with Jonathan and Tommy at the Harrel Agency until his death.

George was always involved with many charitable and civic activities that helped make his community a better place. He served as co-chairman of the Winn Parish Salvation Army for 15 years. He made several mission trips to Central America and traveled with Tommy to Sri Lanka in 2005 to help rebuild homes after the tsunami. George was appointed to the Bank of Winnfield and Trust Company Board of Directors in 1994 and served until his death. He was a member of the High 84 Four-Laning Commission for numerous years. One of his favorite organizations that was particularly close to his heart was the Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame. He was involved with the museum from its inception and served as the president of the Friends of the Louisiana Political Museum Foundation until his death. George received the 2010 Governor's Award from the museum and was also a two-time recipient of the Winn Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the year.

George had many interest in life from participating in an archaeological dig in Africa to the many hiking and camping trips he took with his family. He was always available to anyone who needed a helping hand.

George was preceded in death by his parents Thomas Howard Harrel, Sr., and Margaret Wren Harrel, and by his nephew Thomas Howard Harrel, III.

He is survived by two sons, Jonathan Wren Harrel of Monroe, and Drs. Jason Carr Harrel and his wife Betsy of Shreveport; the mother of his children and George's best friend Viki Sanders Harrel; one brother Thomas Howard Harrel, Jr., and his wife Angela of Winnfield; six grandchildren: Jon Wren, Neil, Peyton, Bella, Sydney, and Will; two nephews Todd and Joshua Harrel; three nieces Day, Sarah, and Laura Weil and many other relatives and friends.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, at the First United Methodist Church of Winnfield from 9:30 a.m. until time of services.
