She had 5 children while in Hobart and shortly after the death of youngest son James the family left Tasmania for Maitland in NSW in 1860. She had another six children while living in NSW. In an effort to possibly leave her past behind, along with creating a better life for her family she departed for New Zealand with her husband in 1873 and changed her surname to Hay.
She remained in New Zealand after the death of her husband John in 1890 for another 21 years. She returned to Sydney with daughter Catherine to live with youngest daughter Mary Maitland in 1911. She passed away 12 months later in 1912, under the name Jane Hay.
