Auto Injuries Kill Pioneer
Death claimed James A. Johnson, Arizona pioneer and former Coconino county sheriff in his home, 81 West Willetta street, yesterday morning as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident near El Centro, Calif., several weeks ago. Mr. Johnson would have been 71 years old in July.
The funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the A. H. McLellan Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. George Logie, officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Mausoleum.
Was Native Of Indiana
Born in Sullivan county, Ind., Mr. Johnson left there when 16 years old, to become a cowboy in Texas. In 1885 he left the Texas Panhandle to go to Flagstaff, where he went to work for the A-1 Cattle Company, one of the state's early outfits.
In 1898 he was elected sheriff of Cocnino county and served in that office for seven years. When the state livestock sanitary board was established, he was appointed chairman. All of his active life was identified with the livestock industry. He moved to Phoenix 27 years ago.
Was Elk, Mason
Mr. Johnson was a member of the Flagstaff Elks lodge and belonged to Phoenix lodges of the Shrine and Masonic orders.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kate Johnson; two sons, Carlyle, Los Angeles, and Clarence, Mariposa, Calif.; a brother, Frank Johnson, Indiana; two sisters, Miss Burta Johnson and Mrs. Murtie Nesbit, Phoenix; a niece, Miss Glenn Nesbit, Phoenix; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mickey Johnson, Mariposa; and a granddaughter, Mary Catherine Johnson, also of Mariposa.
Pallbearers will be Frank Mosshammer, Foutz Walch, H. V. Mixon, Vint Mixon, Henry H. Miller and Charles Elliott.
