Actress. Raised in Harlem, New York, she studied Music at Juilliard College and went on to training in Dance under the tutorage of Alvin Ailey and Martha Graham. At the age of twenty-one, she made her Broadway acting debut in the production "Something More!" (1964) and co-starred in the stage musical "Sweet Charity" in London. The later, she co-starred opposite Shirley MacLaine in the 1969 motion picture adaptation. Other films include "The Andromeda Strain" (1971), "Cool Breeze" (1972), "Soylent Green" (1973) and "Uptown Saturday Night" (1974). Among her many TV credits include "The Young Lawyers", "The Streets of San Francisco" and "Police Woman." She will perhaps be remembered by television audiences for playing 'Public Defender Liz Williams" in the situation comedy "Night Court" (1984) which she received an Emmy Award nomination. She earned an additional Emmy Award Nomination for "The Women of Brewster Place" (1989). She was married to British TV and film director Don Chaffey from 1985 until his death in 1990.
