United States Navy Rear Admiral. A graduate of United States Naval Academy Class of 1922, in 1932 he was detached to serve with Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd on his Antarctic II Expedition, serving as the captain of the "Bear of Oakland". For his service in 1934 aboard the battleship "USS Nevada" he was awarded the Navy's Distinguished Service Medal. At that time this medal superseded the Navy Cross and less than 100 were awarded between its inception in 1919 and the start of World War II in 1941. During the Second World War he was on General Dwight D. Eisenhower's staff and was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal, two Legion of Merit awards and several British and French awards.
