M. Merne (nee Riddel) Last - Born in Beverley Township, Ont., July 17, 1912. Died August 13, as a result of complications from a stroke, at The Westmount, Kitchener, in her 96th year. Daughter of the late John and Jean (nee: Patterson) Riddel. Widow of Carl Last, who predeceased her on November 15, 2003. Sister to Edith Wiegand (Cambridge). Mother of Barbara Burnstein. Mother-in-law to former son-in-law, Barry Burnstein. Much loved Grammie to Robyn Burnstein (Vancouver) and Drue Kendrick (Clinton) of Queen Charlotte, B.C.; and great- grandmother to Mara and Ryan Kendrick. A lifelong member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and that institution's L.C.W. An avid bridge player until macular degeneration precluded this pursuit. She continued to display a keen interest in organized sport; frequently listening to a baseball game in one room and hockey in another. The progression of vascular dementia halted her many activities. It was a valiant struggle. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Westmount for their care and affection in the last five years. Interment has taken place. A service to remember Merne will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home , 171 King Street South, Waterloo, on Friday, August 17, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow in the Historic Kuntz House of the funeral home. Condolences for the family and donations to the C.N.I.B. may be arranged through the funeral home. In living memory of Merne, a tree will be planted through the Trees for Learning program by the funeral home. "I will not go gently into that good night."
