GAVEY, Ivy Gwendoline “Gwen”
November 24, 1926 – April 30, 2017
It is with great sadness, and yet gratitude, that we announce the passing of our dear mom, Gwen Gavey. We feel deep sorrow that she is gone from our daily lives but also gratitude that she had such a long, happy, and healthy 90 1/2 years. Mom was born on November 24th, 1926 in her parents home in the little fishing village of Grande Grave, Quebec. She married dad, Franklin Gavey in 1943 and went on to raise 5 children, Wayne, Cynthia, Philip, Norman and Larry. She was born weighing in at 4lbs in the 1920’s, which made it a miracle that she even survived. But she was a fighter and lived her entire life as a woman of great strength and determination to tackle and complete any challenge put in her way. After moving from Grand Grave closer to town in the early 1970’s, her and Dad both had to get their drivers licences for the first time. Not so easy when you are in your mid 40’s. Once all of their children and their families moved to Alberta in the late 70’s and early 80’s, Mom and Dad made the move out west too, where they thrived being so close to everyone. Mom loved her family, loved family gatherings and special occasions, but most of all loved feeding her family! You never left her table hungry! She had a keen interest in each and every grandchild’s life and loved to hear all about their adventures! Left to mourn her passing are her children and their families, which includes 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Many, many thanks to the wonderful, caring staff at Agecare Sagewood in Strathmore, for the past 5 ½ years of compassionate and heartfelt care they provided her. Several came by to share their memories, grief and tears with us today. We will be forever grateful. Special thanks to Dr. Manocha and the great staff at the Strathmore hospital for their care and support during such a difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wheatland and Area Hospice Society (P.O. Box 2154, Strathmore, AB, T1P 1K2) or to the Canadian Cancer Society (#200, 325 Manning Rd. NE, Calgary, T2E 2P5). A public viewing and visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Wheatland Funeral Home from 7:00-9:00 p.m. A private family funeral will be held at a later time.
