Staten Island native and owner of Broadway Sweet Shop
Carol Eve Richards (nee Elzer) of Keyport, N.J., passed away on Christmas Day at Bay Shore Medical Center in Holmdel.
Born in Staten Island, Carol was a graduate of Curtis High School and former owner of the Broadway Sweet Shop. She moved to New Jersey in 1982, where she worked in the housing and service industry.
Carol was a longtime volunteer with the Perth Amboy Domestic Violence Response Team and worked with the senior residences in her community. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing bingo with friends and taking day trips to Atlantic City.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Richards, and her parents, Edith and Edwin Elzer.
She is survived by her children, Nanci, Erik and his wife, Shannon Richards, Timothy and his fiancee, Laurie Harcrow; three grandchildren, Kyle, Kimberly and Amelia Richards; two grandchildren by marriage, Jewels and Kohen Harcrow; sister to Ed and his wife, Sandy, Peter and his wife, Barbara, and James Elzer, Nancy and her husband, Eugene "Corky" Pugliese.
A private cremation was arranged by Gustav J. Novak Funeral Home, 419 Barclay St., Perth Amboy, N.J., with a burial at Moravian Cemetery in Staten Island. A public memorial service for friends and family will be held on Feb. 8, 2020, from 2 to 6 p.m. at American Legion Raritan Post 23, 81 West Front Street, Keyport, N.J. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Perth Amboy Domestic Violence Response Team, 365 New Brunswick Ave., Perth Amboy, N.J. 08861.
