MADISON – Carol Krebs (Struck) Olson of Madison, age 88, passed away after a short illness on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020, while receiving hospice care at Belmont Nursing. Carol was born on Dec. 24, 1931, in Milwaukee to Herbert and Adelaide (Dolly) Ambs Struck.

Carol attended Bay View High School in Milwaukee and was a big fan of the Green Bay Packers. On Aug. 5, 1950, she married Gerald Krebs in Milwaukee. Together, they had two sons, Kenneth Krebs born in June 1951 and David Krebs born in November 1952. Tragically, her husband Gerry died in a hunting related accident in November 1953, leaving her a young widow at age 23 with two young boys. Her mother died just two years later from diabetes at age 53.

After Gerry died, Carol had a lot of family support, especially from her father, Herbert as well as the family of her younger sister, Dolores and husband Fred who lived nearby. Ken and David’s grandfather, Herbert was a particularly strong presence in their lives.

Carol found a job at the Boston Store in downtown Milwaukee where she eventually became a manager. Carol believed that all people were the same and in the mid 60’s she joined the NAACP. In 1966, she met Mike Evachenko of Madison who worked for Ozark Airlines. They married in 1967 and the family moved to Madison on a very frigid day in 1968 shortly after the famous Ice Bowl game. While married to Mike, she acquired a love of travel after seeing a lot of Europe during their honeymoon. They eventually grew apart and divorced in 1971.

Carol worked over the years at various jobs, including at Central Colony, and eventually becoming the manager of the housekeeping department at several hotels in Madison, including the Inn on The Park, and also at hotels in Florida and Virginia. While working at the Sheraton in Madison, she met and fell in love with Gary Olson who was head of the Maintenance Department. They married in 1977 but sadly he developed lung cancer and died in 1978.

Carol also met Alice Bazey in the 70’s who would become her lifelong best friend, housemate, shopping partner, and traveling companion. They loved to get to the stores at the crack of dawn for some serious shopping on Black Friday. Alice was always a part of the family, attending many a celebration on Christmas Eve to celebrate Carol’s birthday and Christmas. Carol was a best friend, cheerleader and advocate for Alice when she had a liver transplant. Alice’s death in 2010 was really hard for Carol especially since she had never lived alone before. She ended up getting two furry companions, Leona and Princess. She loved those cats!

Family was always very important to Carol. She was adamant that we all get together and celebrate every birthday in the family, especially those of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren! When her brother, Carl got Alzheimer’s disease, she stepped in to make sure he was well cared for until his death in 2001. The death of her 38-year-old grandson, Cameron broke her heart.

On Halloween 2013, Carol was knocked over by a car and hit her head while crossing the street near her apartment. This accident affected her short-term memory and eventually she had to move to an assisted living facility. Although her faculties were diminished in her later years, she retained her love for her boys and family and kept her sharp wit until near the end. The words to the Frank Sinatra song “My Way” pretty much describes how we all remember her.

Carol is survived by her loving sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Sharon Krebs of Madison and David and Marcia Krebs of Stoughton; grandchildren, Derek Krebs and Tammy Leonhardt; great-grandchildren, Shylo and Derek Krebs; and dear nieces and nephews, Stigler (Denise, Bradley, Freddy, Terry, Vince) and Cain (Cathy, Chuck).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Adelaide Struck; her sisters, Adelaide (Leroy) Cain and Dolores (Fred) Stigler; her brothers, Carl (Eta) and David Struck; and grandchildren, Michelle Schlecht and Cameron Krebs.

Before her accident, Carol wrote this poem:

Uniqueness of One

Each of us is a work of art,
We all have a different face,
And when we die, we disappear,
No one can take our place.

Many have been before us,
With zillions yet to come,
But the essence of our being is,
Forever, Our Uniqueness of One.

At Carol’s request, no visitation will be held. Her cremated remains have been interred with her father Herbert Struck at Roselawn Memorial Park in Madison. Online condolences, photographs, and other memories may be shared at www.gundersonfh.com.
