Helen R. Goodman departed from this life on July 11, 2016, and on this day, we shall all pay tribute to one of God’s greatest gifts. Born on January 10, 1936, to the late Charlie and Kelsie Ragins, from birth, Helen remained a resident of Sumter, SC for eighty years.

Over the years, Helen was known to many as a spiritual gospel singer who privileged us with many powerful and spirit filled songs. Helen was a former member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as the President of the Adult Choir for many years. In 2010, Helen joined ALIVE Praise & Worship Center & Ministries, where she served as Church Mother under the spiritual guidance and teachings of her son, Pastor James F. Goodman.

In 1980, Mrs. Goodman embarked on the notion to start her own business, Goodman’s Community Florist. For more than three decades, her generosity and professionalism impacted the lives of countless Sumter residents during some of the happiest and saddest times of their lives. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Goodman also involved herself in other community organizations; The Eveready Willing Workers of Walker Ave., The Chamber of Commerce, and The Household of Ruth, to name a few.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband, Robert L. Goodman, Sr., five daughters, Gwendolyn (Johnny) Heyward, Pastor Mary Jane Ragins, Rebecca Lynch, Angela (Shawn) Foxworth, and Valerie Goodman; four sons, Pastor James F. (Tonya) Goodman, Robert L. (Cielita) Goodman, Curtis (Mary) Miller, Leon (Terri) Chisholm, twenty-two grandchildren, and twenty-five great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a sister, Cora Lee Ragins; a special friend/cousin, Betty Lou Burch; a special cousin/daughter, Lorraine Washington-Dennis, a God-daughter, Ida Lee Golden, and a brother-in-law, Leon Gass.

Mrs. Helen Goodman was preceded in death by her mother, Ms. Kelsie Ragins, her father, Mr. Charlie Ragins, a sister, Mrs. Patricia Gass, and a great granddaughter, Khamari Henderson.

Mrs. Goodman will be placed in the church at 2pm for viewing until the hour of service. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at 3pm at Salem Chapel and Heritage Center, 101 S. Salem St., Sumter, SC with Pastor James Goodman, Officiating assisted by Pastor Mary Jane Ragins.
