Samuel Sherwood died suddenly of heart trouble Thursday afternoon, at his residence, Woodland House, about a mile below this village, which has been the Sherwood county home more than a hundred years. He spent the winter in the south of France in the hope that the climate might be favorable to his heath, and he had recently returned to his home here.

Mr. Sherwood was born in New York in 1852. He was the son of John Sherwood, a prominent lawyer of New York City, and Mrs. M.E.W. Sherwood, the gifted authoress, both of whom spent many summers here. Samuel graduated with honor from Harvard College and studied law. After admission to the bar he practiced his profession for some time in the office of his father, but this did not prove congenial to him and he became an artist of much skill. He was never married, and spent much time in travel and in the enjoyment of the advantages that his means and leisure afforded. He was a delightful gentleman to meet, and although of rather retiring ways, he made many friends who sincerely regret to learn of his death.

He has one brother, Arthur Sherwood of New York City. The funeral was held at St. John’s Church Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, the Rev. Mr. Grout assisted by Canon Knowles of New York City, conducting the services. The burial was in Woodland Cemetery.
