Shirley Marie (Mather) Hays of Leander Texas, passed away peacefully at the age of 79 after a courageous fight with cancer on Tuesday, February 4th surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was born on November 27, 1940 to parents, Grady Lee Mather and Daphne Pauline (Glosson) Mather in Williamson County, Texas. She attended all 12 years of school in Liberty Hill, TX. where she played basketball, became a High School cheerleader and homecoming queen.

She married her childhood sweetheart, Glen Hays in 1959 one day before she turned 19. They lived in Austin for about

7 ½ years before moving back to Liberty Hill where they raised their 2 daughters, Sherry Lynn and Rebecca Pauline. They moved to Kingsland, TX. in 2012 to be by the lake until Shirley fell ill and they moved in with their daughter Rebecca in Leander.

Shirley held various jobs over the years in Austin, TX. working for Farmers Insurance Group, Gulf Mart Inc., Reichhold Chemicals, American Motors, Bill Mundy Pontiac and for a while Glen and Shirley owned and operated the Panther Den in Liberty Hill.

They both loved to work in their vegetable garden and plant every kind of flower around the house that would grow in Texas, from rose gardens to rock gardens. Among her many talents she enjoyed refinishing wood furniture, sewing and canning jelly and vegetables. She was extremely passionate about reading all types of books. She will best be remembered for the love and care she showed her grandchildren. They knew a trip to grandma’s meant a lot of fun and attention walking to the local store, exploring outside, playing dress-up and the ever so popular trip to Walmart.

Shirley was survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Glen Hays; daughter Rebecca Myers and granddaughter Madison Myers from Leander TX.; daughter Sherry Montemayor, Edward Brewster and granddaughter Baylie Brewster from Liberty Hill TX.; granddaughter Jaime Montemayor from Austin, TX.; granddaughter Valerie Johnson, husband Austin Johnson and great-granddaughter Josephine Johnson from Lubbock, TX.; niece Crystal Childers from Beaverton, OR. and brother Kittrell Lee Mather from Austin, TX.

Family members that preceded her in death are her mother Daphne Pauline (Glosson); father Grady Lee Mather; sister Ruby Pauline Childers; brother-in-law Cecil “Spike” Childers; son-in-law Walter Eugene “Gene” Myers and grandson Travis Myers.

Family and friends are welcome to join us on Saturday, February 8, 2020 to celebrate her life with a come and go, viewing and reception between 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Ramsey Funeral Home located at 5600 Williams Drive in Georgetown, Texas.
