Obituary from Community of Hope Funeral Service (Hobbsville, NC) website
Herman Lycurtis Hunter, 71, was born May 19, 1945 in Gates County, North Carolina. He was the youngest of seven children born to the late William A. and Edna V. Hunter. God sent an angel to call him home on Sunday, February 5, 2017 during his stay at Down East Health and Rehab Center, Gatesville, NC.
Herman was a lifelong member of Joppa Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a faithful usher until his health would no longer allow. He attended Gates County Public Schools and was a member of the graduating class of 1966 from Central High School. Upon graduating, Herman did carpentry work for a contracting company for numerous years before starting at the Pepsi Cola and Bottling Company, where he remained for 15 years until he was forced into early retirement due to a back injury.
With no formal education or training, Herman was also a self taught carpenter, plumber, mechanic, and electrician. You name it and he could do it. He was known around town as the "heater man" because of his knowledge and ability to repair heaters for a countless number of people.
Herman was married in 1978 to Doris Jean Nowell Hunter and to this union, three children were born.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Hunter
Left to cherish his memories are: His devoted wife of 38 years, Doris J. Hunter; two sons, Tracy L. Hunter (Victoria) of Hertford, NC and Bryan E. Hunter (Mattea) of Upper Marlboro, MD; one daughter, Robin D. Hunter of Hobbsville, NC; five grandchildren, Travon, Omaree, Brycen, Zayah and Zachary Hunter; three brothers, Melvin Hunter (Minnie) of Waterbury, CT, Melgrew Hunter (Julia) of Freeport, NY, and John Hunter (Edith) of Hampton, VA; two sisters, Gladys Mitchell and Ernestine White both of Jamaica, NY; six brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also leaves to cherish so many memories his very devoted friend of 50 years Walter "Boot" Kee.
