In the early morning on February 4, 2020, Joann Walker went to be with the Lord. She was 86 years old.
Joann was of Catholic faith and was a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to host parties with her husband, Tom, as well as dance, travel, read and cook. She was very interested in anything related to history.
Born on December 26, 1933, in Mitchell, IN. She grew up in Bedford, IN where she attended St. Vincent Catholic School through 8th grade and then attended and graduated from Bedford High School. After graduation she attended and graduated from Indiana Business College in Indianapolis, IN. She then went to work in the Statistics Department at General Motors in Indianapolis.
She then married her high school sweetheart, Tom Walker, in 1954. After a few various moves, while Tom was in the Army and then finishing his college degree, they settled in Bloomington in 1965.
She was a homemaker until her youngest child went to elementary school. At that time, she went to work for Fred Prall, CPA and Robert May, Insurance. In 1974 her mother passed away in which at that time she took over her mother's Merle Norman Studio in Bedford, IN through the 1970's and 1980's. She then sold the business and worked a retirement job at Stewart's Hallmark, here in Bloomington. Joann enjoyed working with people and in a retail environment.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mickey Ela & Henry Greene, infant daughter Kimberly Sue Walker and her husband of 64 years, Thomas A. Walker. She leaves behind two children, John (Sabrina) Walker and Mary Anne (Randy) Thacker. Four grandchildren Tony (Christie) Walker, Kyle Walker, Thomas J. (Ashley) Thacker and Amanda (Adam) Garrett, and five great-grandchildren Trevor Walker, Breeanna England-Thacker, Caleb Walker, Forrest J. Thacker and Ella Rose Marie Garrett.
The family would like to thank Tom Tarzian and Father Tom, from St. Charles Church, the staff at The Beehive, the staff and nurses at Gentry Park and the staff and nurses at Heart to Heart Hospice for all of their help, kindness and care they gave to Joann and her family.
There will be a graveside service at Springville West Cemetery Friday, February 7, 2020 at 1:00 pm for all her family and friends and a gathering of food and stories to follow at Redman Hall in Smithville, IN.
Condolences can be sent to the family at allencares.com. Donations, in her name, can be made to the White River Animal Shelter in Bedford, IN or to Alzheimer's Research.
