Ivan Eithel St. Thomas, 91, husband of Gladys Baxter St. Thomas, was born Feb. 8, 1920, in Boston, Mass., a son of the late Simon McGusty St. Thomas and Helena Delcena Cranmore St. Thomas. He departed this life on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mr. St. Thomas was reared in Plaisance, British Guiana, and attended Queens High School. A veteran of the British Army, he served for four years during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge. In 1946, he settled in New York and graduated from George Washington Evening High School. Ivan earned his bachelor and master of science degrees in education from the City College of New York, all while working full-time at Montefiore Hospital, Bronx, N.Y. He was employed by the New York City Department of Education as a teacher of industrial arts. After moving his family to Amityville, N.Y., he taught at Benjamin Schlesinger Junior High School IS 72, Queens, N.Y., until his retirement in 1982. Upon retiring, he moved to Sumter and became an active member of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gladys Baxter St. Thomas of Sumter; children, Vincent Ovid St. Thomas of Los Angeles, Calif., Derrick Mortimer St. Thomas of Queens, Agnes Abby Rosemond St. Thomas of Staten Island, N.Y., Ineatha Delcena St. Thomas of Union City, Ga., Ivan Eithel St. Thomas Jr. of Sumter, and Dwayne Arkel St. Thomas of Los Angeles; 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; dear cousins, treasured in-laws, a multitude of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and associates.

He was preceded in death by two children, Gordon Ivor St. Thomas and Mary Taylor; grandson, Michael Taylor; and three brothers, Fitzherbert St. Thomas, Virgil St. Thomas and Claude Ince.

Viewing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary Inc.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church with the Rev. D. Joseph Rhodes officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
